I have studied this photo with a magnifying glass. I cannot figure out who the little guy is in the flying hat. He may be the son of one of the soldiers in the picture.

Heavy bomb damage can be seen in this aerial photo above the city. 

 

The city in the pic is Viipuri/Viborg and I think the photo is taken from the castle tower to the east. - Esa K.

Viipuri / Wiborg got bombed both during Winter War and Continuation War.
During late Winter War it was also bombarded by "aavetykki" ("ghost gun" as
the Finns called it), which was Soviet railway gun firing tens of kilometres away.

"Palace of Kuusinen". Administration building in
Äänislinna / Petroskoi / Petrozavodsk. Presumably used by Otto Ville Kuusinen (Leader of Finnish Reds in 1918, prime minister of pupper-government named after him in 1939-1940 etc...) while he lead Soviet Karelia in 1940. - Jarkko T.
